Project location among the wider Brisbane context
This diagram shows how the site is located at the junction of all the different suburbs and elements of the city which essentially means it has become a 'forgotten' space. It diagramatically shows how this has happened and highlights the need for the site to become activated again.
Zones in the greater context:
The function of this building has been determined through the analysis of the surrounding functions in the area. This analysis diagram shows the mixture of residential/ accomodation facilities, commerical/ retail precincts, industrial buildings, cultural buildings, educational buildings and open space. The operation of a science centre/ astronomy observatory will primarily cater for the educational and residential areas, and also bring people from in the CBD around to this area.
Transport and access to the site
The key to safety in this project will be to analyse the accessibility of the site. As this building will be used my families and also at night, it will become vital to provide a high level of security.
The shaded sections in this analysis link with the previous zoning exercise and show the areas that I am hoping to attract primary users from. The red lines show possible access routes for these areas and the blue line shows an axis which needs to become more of a transport route. These routes can function as routes for vehicles (buses and cars), cyclists and pedestrians.
This analysis was important to conduct in showing existing transport nodes. The green dots represent existing bus stops, the purple line is the railway and the blue dots are existing ferry stops. What I concluded was that there was adequate transport facilities along the top of the cliff, but not enough at the ground level of the site. The red dots represent areas that I think could benefit with a transport node to bring people to this project. In particular I have proposed a ferry stop to use particularly as a night time facility.
Now a specific site analysis has been carried out of the surrounding context, it is now time to look at the buliding itself.
